Mrs. Kirkwood hosted her Second Annual KOES 5th Grade Science Fair on April 9, 2010. Since February, the 5th grade focused on the scientific method and how to perform controlled experiments. Each student this year did an individual project. Some topics chosen were plants, yeast, paper, gears, electromagnets, and volcanoes. Students formed scientific questions, researched their topics, created hypotheses, designed experiments to test the questions, and recorded their data in written reports. Heather Hanson said, “I learned how to use the scientific method to make a compass. It was fun!” Students were also required to create a display board and present their projects during the Science Fair. Students were not officially judged but did receive science and writing grades. The evening of the 9th at the KOES Carnival, all projects were on display for the community to see. Many at the carnival commented to Mrs. Kirkwood about how impressive the displays were. The students as well enjoyed the experience. “People probably thought my balloon rocket was cool! I was proud of it,” said Zakai Ingvalson.
